Know the visiting Snakes

NOPL’s series of awareness creating workshops has taken off at our base at Yala Village where two such sessions did take place in the last couple of months. Event one was an introduction to three species of snakes found in the property with specimens caught inside the hotel at various locations – displayed and the participating staff briefed about the physical identification methods of these snakes, their behavior and the lethalness of their venom and how it acts on the human body. After a careful session, the snakes captured inside the hotel were released back in the property with the poisonous species released well away from the rooming area.

Live and Let Live – Respect the Elephants

A second workshop was held particularly aimed at the Yala Village staff and their encounters with visiting elephants during the drought period. The scarcity of water and lack of food does make lone bulls wonder far away from the safety of the parks during this season – bringing them well inside our property during the months of July till October. Over enthusiasm and aggressive behavior towards these elephants can result in dangerous consequences which we addressed and successfully brought about a consensus of how best to handle this situation. These sessions will continue throughout this period thus helping all staff to be reminded that we occupy a land which falls along age old migratory paths of elephants who sees no significance on man made boundaries .. hence it is us who needs to be accommodating and take necessary precautions which will help these magnificent creatures to continue wondering in there chosen paths while we negate the chances of contact with guests and staff significantly.

CSR venture – Help School children to understand Nature Better

We are keenly promoting a series of awareness campaigns in the schools around the vicinity of our properties on various awareness related programs which will help village children and their folks to understand the abundance of Nature in their back yard with a true sense of appreciation.

This we believe will raise the understanding of villagers of the wild life and the importance of conservation to a new level and make them understand that an animal Live is worth much more than a Dead one. It is our endeavor to help the villagers around our properties to appreciate the wild life as a source of opportunity than a pest which will in the long term build a lasting co-existence profitable to all parties involved.
